The Iszaks recognized a need for a different type of yoga that would meet the special health needs of seniors. They designed an entirely new style of yoga. This yoga is based upon the principles of geriatric science emphasizing the health enhancing benefits.
Initially, San Diego county yoga teachers supported this vision by donating time to the project. Health professionals from institutions such as Scripps, UCSD and SIRA (Stein Institute of Research on Aging) offered their support by becoming faculty members of a scientific team to bring yoga and gerontology under the same roof. Thus a new yoga style was born: Silver Age Yoga.
In response to a nation-wide demand from yoga teachers wanting to learn more about teaching seniors, an Online certification course was developed to teach Silver Age Yoga. Yoga teachers who successfully completed the Online certification course were given the opportunity to join the Silver Age Yoga Community Outreach program. They continued their training and committed to teaching in a sponsored center. Simultaneously, senior centers were solicited as venues to offer these specialized yoga classes to their constituency at no cost to the seniors.
San Diego County residents can enjoy practicing Silver Age Yoga in the comfort of their home by watching the County Television Network (CTN) public access cable channel.
9:00 a.m. and 2:00 p.m. Monday through Friday
Beneficial for people of all ages but geared toward older adults and caregivers, Silver Age Yoga is a relaxing way to exercise and cleanse your body and spirit. It is meditation and breathing combined with poses to accommodate a state of mind where stress is no longer allowed to reside. (A CTN original production)
Over the years, Silver Age Yoga has appeared on several television programs, the local affiliates of: CBS, NBC and ABC.
